Whirlbite during [Frenzied Assault] — the vertical gauge on the left turns blue

Whirlbite is a Water DPS that stacks the distance it moves during battle to switch on [Frenzied Assault]. Every 1m adds 1 notch of [Surging Wave], and 40 notches give [Frenzied Assault] for 10s. Each time you enter or refresh it, the core skill Wavebreaker Shark Rush turns into 1 piercing dash. You do not need to lay down water beforehand.

This post lays out how Whirlbite, the Water DPS of the Whisperwake Isles, fights: how much [Surging Wave] the trait Surging Wave stacks, how many Dodge Dashes and High-Speed Cut [Soaring Speed Up] it takes to fill 40 notches, [Frenzied Assault] and the Wavebreaker Shark Rush dash, damage numbers with and without Frenzied Assault, the skill numbers, the Held Item Contract and the effects each Held Item adds, and the Mobility skill Ride the Waves with its Water Storage Tank.
  • [Surging Wave]: 1 notch per 1m moved in battle, and 40 notches give [Frenzied Assault] for 10s. 1 Dodge Dash = 6 notches
  • High-Speed Cut: Cooldown 8s, and for 15s of [Soaring Speed Up] notches stack 2x as fast (1 Dodge Dash = 12 notches)
  • Wavebreaker Shark Rush: using 5 stacks of the target's Water Debuff gives +5 notches. Every time you enter or refresh [Frenzied Assault], it becomes 1 dash
  • [Frenzied Assault] Water Elemental Boost 25%: the description says 25%, but the damage numbers on the same target did not go up (High-Speed Cut 568 · 588 · 568 → 573 · 583 · 573)
  • Held Item Contract: the enhanced Wavebreaker Shark Rush — uses 3 stacks, +15m of extra movement. The cost is 10 Marks of the Strong

1At a glance: a DPS switched on by distance moved

  • Whirlbite is a Water DPS (Nova Stage). Saws evolves into it at Lv.64 with 1 Wave Stone. Its Prismana Form is Water · Dark, and both forms share the same trait.
  • The trait Surging Wave counts the distance you move during battle. Fill 40m and you enter [Frenzied Assault].
  • How it differs from Sherro: Sherro's trait Tidal Heart only gives Water Elemental Boost when you are in a water environment or have absorbed water. Whirlbite needs only distance moved, with no water environment condition.

2The trait Surging Wave and [Surging Wave]

  • In-game description: "When a skill deals damage, it additionally inflicts 2 stacks of [Water Debuff]. After moving a total of 40m, enters [Frenzied Assault], gaining a 25% Water Elemental Boost for 10s."
  • The trait is named Surging Wave, and the state that counts distance moved is called [Surging Wave].
  • Every 1m you move in battle gives 1 notch. Height (jumping · falling) is not counted. At 40 notches you enter [Frenzied Assault] and the count starts again from zero.
  • On screen, the number icon in the buff slot is [Surging Wave]. The vertical gauge on the left of Whirlbite's body fills up too, and turns blue during [Frenzied Assault].
  • The number does not go up smoothly while you move. It goes up in a few jumps. If you stop and wait a moment, the number catches up.
  • About 3 seconds after the battle ends, [Surging Wave] and [Frenzied Assault] disappear together.
  • 2 stacks of Water Debuff: every time a skill hits, the target gets 2 stacks. A skill that hits several times gives 2 stacks per hit (High-Speed Cut, 3 hits = 6 stacks). Basic Attacks and the Ultimate do not add any.
  • Each stack of Water Debuff lowers the target's Water Resistance by 1%, up to 20 stacks.
In-game description of the trait Surging Wave

3Dodge Dash and High-Speed Cut [Soaring Speed Up]

  • 1 Dodge Dash (Shift) = 6 notches. I stood still and dashed six times, and all six gave +6.
  • High-Speed Cut slashes around you 3 times and applies [Soaring Speed Up] for 15s. The in-game description says "Reduces the distance required to enter [Frenzied Assault] by 50%," and the [Soaring Speed Up] description says "During the effect, the speed at which you accumulate Surging Wave increases by 100%."
  • During [Soaring Speed Up], 1 Dodge Dash = 12 notches (all three times). Notches stack exactly 2x.
  • High-Speed Cut has a Cooldown of 8s and [Soaring Speed Up] lasts 15s, so if you reuse it every time the Cooldown ends, [Soaring Speed Up] never drops.
  • 40 notches with dashes alone: 7 dashes normally (6 × 7 = 42), 4 dashes during [Soaring Speed Up] (12 × 4 = 48).
  • 2 dashes are 12 notches (24 during [Soaring Speed Up]), so dashes alone will not switch on [Frenzied Assault]. The distance from walking · Sprint and the +5 notches of Wavebreaker Shark Rush have to stack together.
  • The +5 notches of Wavebreaker Shark Rush stay +5 notches during [Soaring Speed Up] too.

4[Frenzied Assault] and the Wavebreaker Shark Rush dash

  • 2 ways to enter: fill [Surging Wave] to 40 notches, or use Hunter's Feast (Ultimate) in battle.
  • It lasts 10s. Notches keep stacking during [Frenzied Assault], and filling 40 notches again or using the Ultimate again refreshes it to 10s. It does not stack to last longer, it just goes back to 10s.
  • Refreshing with the Ultimate does not erase your [Surging Wave] notches. They keep stacking from where they were.
  • The Wavebreaker Shark Rush dash: every time you enter or refresh [Frenzied Assault], Wavebreaker Shark Rush turns into 1 dash. You charge forward and pierce every target on the way, with an extra 40% Might of damage.
  • When it becomes a dash, the border of the Wavebreaker Shark Rush (E) icon at the bottom right glows. After you use the dash once, it goes back to the leap, and becomes a dash again the next time you refresh. It does not stay a dash for the whole [Frenzied Assault].
  • Water Elemental Boost 25%: the description says 25%, but the damage numbers did not go up. These numbers compare non-Crit damage on the same target, before it was broken.
  • If the 25% had applied, one hit of High-Speed Cut should have been around 710 to 735.

6Held Item Contract and Held Items

  • Held Item Contract: if you sign a +15 Legendary Held Item with Whirlbite, the Wavebreaker Shark Rush of every Whirlbite holding that item becomes the enhanced version. The cost is 10 Marks of the Strong.
  • The enhanced version: it uses 3 stacks of the target's Water Debuff (5 originally) and stacks 15m more movement (5m originally). Might 70 · Energy 20 · Cooldown 1s · the 40% dash bonus stay the same.
  • For the target's stacks, one Wavebreaker Shark Rush is +2 − 5 = −3 before enhancing, and +2 − 3 = −1 with the enhanced version. The enhanced version lowers the target's stacks less.
  • Pressing the "Enhance ⇌" button on the skill description screen lets you preview the enhanced description. The text at the bottom of the screen says "Equip the exclusive contract Held Item to activate enhancement effects."
  • Enhancing the core skill with a Prismatic Stone gives the same enhanced version. Alpha Whirlbite has the enhanced version from the start.
  • The table below shows how the effects of 3 Held Items apply to Whirlbite.

Effects each Held Item adds to Whirlbite

Omenbone Flute

On Whirlbite
The core effect "Each time you inflict an [Elemental Debuff], increase your own All-Round Elemental Boost by 10% for 10s. Stacks up to 3 times." stacks on every skill hit (1 High-Speed Cut = 3 times). +10 raises the cap to 5 stacks (+50%). +15: at 5 stacks, extra damage of 1.5% per stack of [Elemental Debuff] on the target, up to 30%. The stacks Wavebreaker Shark Rush uses are taken off the target.

Fission Needles

On Whirlbite
Applies only to the 3 hits of the Basic Attack. It does not apply to Wavebreaker Shark Rush · High-Speed Cut · Serrated Bite · Hunter's Feast. (For Gachapus, Bubble Barrage counts as Basic Attack Damage so it applies, but Whirlbite's skills do not.)

Riftbreaker Goggles

On Whirlbite
The +10 "When equipped by a [BREAK] Aniimo, increases the wielder's Crit Rate by 20%" is received only by Aniimo in the BREAK position. Whirlbite, a DPS, does not receive it. The core and +15 effects are about BREAK damage and targets you have put into Break State.

7Flow of play

  • Chained in order, the actions above look like this.
  1. 1

[Soaring Speed Up] with High-Speed Cut

    • Using High-Speed Cut (Cooldown 8s) makes notches stack 2x as fast for 15s of [Soaring Speed Up].
    • If all 3 hits land, the target gets 6 stacks of Water Debuff.
  2. 2

    Fill 40 notches

    • Fill 40 notches with movement · Dodge Dash (12 notches) · Wavebreaker Shark Rush (uses 5 stacks, +5 notches).
    • At 40 notches you enter [Frenzied Assault] for 10s.
  3. 3

    Wavebreaker Shark Rush dash

    • When the border of the Wavebreaker Shark Rush (E) icon glows, the next Wavebreaker Shark Rush is a piercing dash.
    • You get 1 dash per entry or refresh.
  4. 4

    Refresh the 10s

    • If you fill 40 notches again during [Frenzied Assault], or use Hunter's Feast, it goes back to 10s and you get 1 dash again.
    • About 3 seconds after the battle ends, everything disappears.

8The Mobility skill Ride the Waves and the Water Storage Tank

  • Ride the Waves (T): you move fast in the Ride the Waves state. You can use it on land too, not only in water. The speed is close to Sprint.
  • Ride the Waves uses the Water Storage Tank. With the water storage full, you can ride the waves for about 6.5 seconds.
  • Water storage fills when Whirlbite has Water Debuff on it. It builds up in water or when it rains, and does not fill on dry ground when it is not raining.
  • Even while riding the waves, water storage fills if there is Water Debuff on you, so it lasts longer than 6.5 seconds.
  • The water drop icon in the buff slot is the Water Debuff on Whirlbite itself. On dry ground it goes down by 1 every 4 to 5 seconds.
  • Because it is on Whirlbite itself, it does not change attack damage. High-Speed Cut dealt the same damage when this number was 16 and when it was 4.
  • In the Swim slot of Aniimo Formation "Exploration", Aniimo with Ride the Waves are shown first.

FAQ

Q. Does the Water Elemental Boost 25% of [Frenzied Assault] apply to damage?
The description says 25%, but the damage numbers did not go up. On the same target, High-Speed Cut was 568 · 588 · 568 (without) → 573 · 583 · 573 (with). The effect that turns Wavebreaker Shark Rush into a piercing dash when you enter or refresh [Frenzied Assault] is still there.
Q. How many Dodge Dashes does it take to switch on [Frenzied Assault]?
1 Dodge Dash is 6 notches, and 12 notches during [Soaring Speed Up]. To fill 40 notches with dashes alone, it takes 7 dashes normally and 4 dashes during [Soaring Speed Up]. In practice, the distance from walking · Sprint and the +5 notches of Wavebreaker Shark Rush stack together.
Q. Does Fission Needles apply to Whirlbite's skills too?
No. It applies only to the 3 hits of the Basic Attack. Wavebreaker Shark Rush · High-Speed Cut · Serrated Bite · Hunter's Feast do not count as Basic Attacks.
Q. How long does Ride the Waves last?
About 6.5 seconds with the water storage full. If Whirlbite has Water Debuff, such as in water or where it rains, water storage fills even while riding the waves and it lasts longer. It does not fill on dry ground when it is not raining.
It has not been confirmed how fast the target's Water Debuff goes down over time, or whether the Omenbone Flute effect is added to or multiplied with other damage-increasing effects.
